Audience Game

With a holiday week ahead, between Canada Day and the Fourth of July, I've decided to move the intended three-player audience game to the next episode. So, that means one player will tackle The Joker's Prize Game for CY$20,000. And if you come the closest to the correct answer to this query, high or low, you'll be that player.

On May 7, 2009, at 4:00pm Central, we recorded a rerun of "Cash Cab" on The Discovery Channel. In this episode, the first level questions were worth $25 each, the next level $50 each and the third level $100. Any red light challenges were worth $250. How much money was awarded to passengers of the cab in this episode? Please respond to the nearest multiple of $25.

(time passes)

Time's up. Let's quickly review the episode in question. The first game ended in a strikeout, the second saw a successful doubling of 600 to 1200 in the video bonus round and the third game ended the same way as the first -- a strikeout.

So -- nuttin' plus 1200 plus nuttin' means...

QUALIFYING ANSWER
$1200

(ding)

...the right answer's $1200. Who's the closest?

Michael Clifford $1225
Ian Laudato $1225
Andy Silikovitz $1225

(Greed tie sfx)

GADZOOKS! A three-way tie for the closest? Uh, OK, tell ya what. Can we call Net Catch 21 and let 'em know we're running late? We'll go ahead and revert to the original plan of making this a three-player game with OVSC to follow. Not that it matters to the game you're about to embark on -- but who locked in 1225 first?

Ian Laudato $1225

All right, Ian's Player 1. Next?

Michael Clifford $1225

The second to lock in 1225 was Michael. So he'll be Player 2. Andy, obviously, you'll be in the third spot. Full audience game after this.

D.J.: Who'll play for 20-grand in the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge? Ian Laudato, Michael Clifford and Andy Silikovitz have to get by the Stock Market. Here's Doug.

Doug: Thank you, D.J. and welcome Ian, Michael and Andy. Let's go right to the big board and see how this game works.

1. SPADE CORP

0.00

2. HEART, INC.

0.00

3. CLUB UNIVERSE

0.00

4. DIAMOND BROS.

0.00

Doug: In Stock Market, we have the stocks of four companies in play -- Spade Corp; Heart, Inc.; Club Universe and Diamond Bros. In a moment, cards from a new Net Poker deck will be drawn from the top of the deck.

When a card's drawn, its suit determines which stock will increase a quarter of a point. The first stock to reach one full point ends the trading session. At the end of the session, those who pick the winning stock will win or share in CY$6000. Each of the other stocks pay off at CY$100 plus CY$25 for each quarter point.

The player with the most cyber-money at the end of the session wins the game and moves on to the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge. If necessary, we'll play Dice Poker to break any tie.

So take a moment and secretly lock in your pick for the winning stock.

Doug: And we're locked in. Ian and Andy go for Heart, Inc. -- Michael's for Club Universe. As always, to help us in the Stock Market game, we turn to VBS MarketWatch anchor Dana Epstein.

(clip rolls on video screen)

Dana: Good day, Doug. Good day, VBS investors. The NASDAQ and S&P were unchanged yesterday, and the DOW closed up almost 200. There's hope for this economy yet. In other news... (opening bell sfx) ... well, other news will have to come some other time, as the VBS Market is about to open, and it's my job to watch, so here goes.

(card dealer, who doubles as a Maria Bartiromo impersonator, deals...)

Dana: Heart, Inc begins up a quarter.

Dana: Spade Corp. is seeing some movement, too, as they're up a quarter.

Dana: Hmm... make that a half, as Spade Corp. is on the move today.

Dana: Club Universe is up a quarter.

Dana: Spade Corp. is now up three-quarters of a point, as the market continues to react to their better than expected performance last quarter.

Dana: Club Universe is up another quarter of a point, making it a half-point for the day.

Dana: Heart, Inc is now up a half.

Dana: Spade Corp. is surging - up a full point today, and... (closing bell sfx) ...and just like that the market has suddenly closed!

1. SPADE CORP

1.00

2. HEART, INC.

0.25

3. CLUB UNIVERSE

4. DIAMOND BROS.

Dana: Here is your VBS MarketSummary for the day. Diamond Brothers remains unchanged, Heart, Inc. finishes up a half, Club Universe is up a half, and in very aggressive trading, Spade Corporation is up a full point. If you've got money in this market, you can't be upset about that. For VBS MarketWatch, I'm Dana Epstein. Doug?

Doug: Thanks, Dana. Even though no one picked the winning stock...

Doug: ...everyone's still in it because the selected stocks made each player CY$150 richer. Let's head over there to the Dice Poker table.
