Rules
(revised December 4, 2011;
subject to change)
From time to time, a special live version of Net Poker will take place in an AOL Instant Messenger chat room (information on exact date and time of the game will be posted on the Net Games Yahoo! Groups and AOL Net Games Yahoo! Groups mailing lists as well as www.dougmorris.net/poker).
No advanced qualifying will be necessary when the date and time of the game is announced. However, the game will start with a qualifying question posted in the chat room.
Those who wish to play must secretly message the host with his/her answer to the question (as always, the qualifying question has a numerical answer). The two players closest to the right answer play the main game (and if time allows for another game, so be it). In the event all the (remaining) answers are over, then simply the player(s) closest to the right answer get to play.
MAIN GAME: Each round is assigned its own deck of 24 playing cards (Ace through 9 of each suit; no wild cards whatsoever). The player who came the closest in qualifying gets to cut the cards with the player who made the higher hand in the previous round cutting the cards in the second (and third) round.
Each rounds plays much like the 5 Card Poker round of a normal game -- except that the scores are cumulative and the contestants are playing for cyber-dollars instead of points. In the first two rounds of Net Poker Live!, questions are worth CY$500 points each, CY$750 for blind card questions and CY$1250 for high hand. These values double in the third round.
The first player to buzz in is recognized and, if correct, is credited with points and control of the cards. A player buzzes in by hitting any key followed by "enter". If the first player to buzz in answers incorrectly, the opposing player has a chance to capitalize and collect the full value of the question (referred to as a "chance to steal").
The player who ends the game with the higher score wins the game and a bonus of more cyber-money and/or a virtual prize. Because there are CY$16,000 available to the players in the game, a score of more than CY$8000 will automatically end the game -- even if the hands in the third round are not completed.
Should the game end in a tie, each player is allowed to discard one card from his/her hand. Then, the next pair of cards will be up for grabs face down with another CY$1500 question to follow. If one player's new hand is better than the other player's new hand, CY$2500 are awarded to the player with the better hand.
THEMES FOR NET POKER LIVE!: These themes are exclusive to Net Poker Live!...
\ Back Words: The players are given a clue and then we'll spell the answer one letter at a time backwards. Players may buzz in when the last letter of the answer is revealed. If a player buzzes in and answers incorrectly, the opponent is given all but the first letter of the answer for a chance to steal. (Note: If no one buzzes in and the answer is completely spelled out, no cyber-dollars are awarded on that question and play continues with the next question.)
\ Six Pack: Six words leading to the identity of a person, place or thing will be revealed one at a time. Players may buzz in after the first word is revealed. (Note: If a player buzzes in and answers incorrectly, the rest of the clue words will be revealed for the opposition's chance to steal.)
\ Five In Common: We'll list five items that have something in common. Players have to identify the common bond. Players may buzz in when the first of the items is revealed. The lists are usually arranged in no particular order. If a player buzzes in and answers incorrectly, any remaining items will be revealed to the opposition for a chance to steal.
\ Scrambled Sayings: We'll list a phrase or title one word at a time -- but out of order. Players have to give the correctly worded phrase or title. Players may buzz in when any word in the phrase or title is revealed. (Note: If a player buzzes in and answers incorrectly, any of the remaining words will be revealed on the opposition's chance to steal.)\ Which One Doesn't Belong?: We'll list four items -- one at a time. Three of the items are united by a common bond; one item simply doesn't belong in the list. As the name of the theme implies, it's the players' objective to identify -- which one doesn't belong. Players may buzz in anytime after the first item of the list is revealed. Once a player buzzes in, (s)he can only select from the answers that have been revealed. (Note: If a player buzzes in and answers incorrectly, any remaining items in the list will be revealed to the opposition for a chance to steal.)
DEUCES WILD DELUXE: Plays like the first half of Deuces Wild Poker on Net Poker for a possible CY$2,222,200. The winning player is staked CY$200 and for every Deuce revealed, a 2 is added to the total. If at least one Outlaw card is uncovered, the player will still have a chance to win a bonus of CY$2,000,000 when the first half is complete.
In the second half of Deuces Wild Deluxe, we'll hide one Deuce and five Outlaws. The player may keep his/her endgame winnings -- or give up all bonus cyber-money accrued for one chance at the CY$2,000,000. A Deuce pays the two million; an Outlaw pays nothing.
MISC. RULES: If a player has to leave the chat room before the game is complete, that player will be replaced with the next closest qualifier.
All cards will be denoted by the host in the chat room by its rank and suit -- the latter of which will be noted by the first letter in the suit's name in lowercase. For example, the Ace of Spades will be shown as "As"; the 10 of Diamonds will be noted as "10d". Further...
CARLY [CY$ 2750] 10d Ks Ac Qh As
ROGER [CY$ 1250] Qs Js Qc 9c 10s
...in this example, a player's cyber-cash total will be noted next to his/her name.
Any royal flush means a bonus of CY$1,000,000, which does not apply to the score of the game.
